A former coworker, a white woman, had a tactic in meetings when she needed to introduce new information. She'd often led with "help me understand" or something similar.

At first, I had no clue what she was doing because whatever she said was always correct. But I soon understood why.

Far too often men don't understand why women talk the way we do. It doesn't matter if the communication is verbal or written. But we communicate the way we do because there will always be pushback.

When we're 100% confident and firm, we're "aggressive" or they don't like our "tone."

When we're not, we need to be mansplained to because clearly we don't know what we're talking about. I've seen it too often. I've experienced it even more.

And in my coworker's case, whenever she spoke up she was attempting to redirect a conversation that was going in the wrong direction.

And every single time people overlooked what she said. Talk about fucked up.

If you're a woman + [insert intersectionalities] it's worse.

Start paying attention to how we speak and how we're received when we do. It's quite the mindfuck at times.
