This was an excellent historical breakdown of how Palestinians lost their home & how Isreal was established by both colonialism and a desperate need to find safe haven from the atrocities Jewish people faced before WWII began, during, & after it ended. Antisemitism is atrocious. So is Islamophobia.

So many Jewish people are protesting the atrocities committed in their name in Gaza & West Bank. They are being arrested for it, being disowned by Jewish communities for it, and targeted with antisemitism for it. https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/23/us/jewish-palestinian-protest-israel-gaza/index.html

Palestinian representative Rashida Tlaib was chastised for speaking against the atrocities being committed in the West Bank and Gaza by Netanyahu and Israeli military. She called out the attack by Hamas as a horrific atrocity, along with all those kidnapped by Hamas and demanded their release.

But speech suppression via censure is a strong sentiment among her colleagues. Rashida has spoken out against antisemitism as well but her comments in support of Palestinian people and their oppression have been equated to antisemitism which is inflammatory and creates a human rights issue.

Antisemitism is a form of white supremacy. And Islamophobia is the same, targeting people based on white supremacist goals. We know this history in the world and in America. It's a terrifying issue. These definitions matter and are meant to address the risk, not favor addressing one over the other.

If we continue to pretend that any support of Palestinians is a form of antisemitism we will be on track to dehumanize & further eradicate the homes & lives of Palestinians in our silence. Speech suppression is dangerous. https://www.hrw.org/news/2023/04/20/un-more-groups-address-antisemitism-issue

It shouldn't require a degree or a personal history to recognize brutal warfare and atrocities when we see and hear about them. We need to speak out because we are able to, and because silence is being used to target people with less power, including black students and professors.

And how does this horrific & divisive situation affect people at work, in the every day? Peace is the narrative that is strongly being shut down. Stopping a genocide of any kind is important. And we want to protect the most vulnerable. Including our coworkers.

What this response to Hamas has done to Palestinians has essentially set Palestinians, and refugees in the West Bank, behind by decades, and their financial system may never recover, forcing them into destitution and danger. So why is US speech about this humanitarian crisis oppressed?
