So my 85 year old father has to pay an ambo (ambulance) bill in of $304 AUD.
if he were a pensioner, it would be free.

Gawd I'd hate to think what the US charges.

Wait lights? WTH. All of these cost are before you step inside and ambulance and before stepping into the actual hospital?

I've seen international reaction videos on the costs of care compared to countries with public health care.

We have different levels
A ride to the hospital no lights or siren 🚨 just an EMT is $500
Response by Medics w/ drugs and deemed to be a "Emergency " could be charged $2000
It's complicated but they are charging the insurance company knowing that they probably will never get paid by the patient

So what happens when a client isn't able to pay the insurance company?

We usually write it off as no pay, we submit a bill to the county and they pay only true expenses. Fuel, personnel, etc.
Here in states we negotiate with insurance companies like barter for onions at the market. Do we get $2000 ? No. But it's the start of negotiations.
