Some people are discussing how we need the Second Amendment to protect against dictators. This, indeed, was one of the primary purposes of the Second Amendment, but perhaps not the way you may think.

The Second Amendment has nothing to do with personal firearms.

It involves ensuring a state militia loyal to the people, which provides a moral check against dictatorship.

The idea is that if only the militia (National Guard) can operate on US ground, not the standing armies (Army, Navy, Air Force, etc.

Thus, any soldiers (National Guard) told to dominate/subjugate the people they respect and have social connections to would not likely follow those orders, as it would go against their morals.

The founders and several Supreme Court Justices, such as Joseph Story, explained all this in detail. Still, as time went on, it has largely been forgotten and replaced with some crazy idea that the Second Amendment is about personal firearms outside of the militia when it isn't.
