Not a new phenomenon. When AT&T broke up and they offered buy outs to employees, they had to offer REALLY sweet deals to the UNIX wizards to come back and work. I had friends who were getting 7x their previous AT&T Salary in 1985, over 250K. You can find them but it'll cost.

In response to Heidi Hafeken.
In 1998 my roommate's older coworker always responded with "COBOL" when someone asked him what language they should learn, citing job security and they could name their price.

I worked in an organization that’s still using COBOL and ALC. There are efforts to train staff to understand and rewrite in new languages but it’s a difficult task when the original code wasn’t written by the same person. At least 20 years of these efforts and the old code keeps on chugging along.
