My grandfather fought Nazis up close. I knew a Jewish couple with numbers on their arms. Through the words and faces of childhood heroes, I understood.
Today’s younger people don’t have that connection, so we must use what we remember to teach them about the horror of the past.
It’s on us now.

My paternal gandmothers family fled Poland to America after WWI. She lost 2 brothers to Dachau & Buchenwald at the start of the Holocaust. Her son/my father was stationed in the Philippines. I knew all kinds of people with numbers tattooed on their arms when I was a kid. It was very real to me.

My old boss in NYC parents also had the numbers branded on their arms. They barely made it out of Nazi Germany.

The couple I knew were friends of my grandparents, would come to Christmas dinner. One year, one of us kids was complaining about the food not being ready. “You ate yesterday, didn’t you?” Al said. He was laughing, but I could see the numbers. I didn’t complain about being hungry again.
