For all the use social media could be good for, it has a lot of the negatives that confound us, no matter what site you're on. At the end of the day, we want people to listen to us, to "hear" us, but it's not that simple, because words, no matter how well thought out, don't convey our humanity.

When you talk to a person, face-to-face, you pick up on the subtle signs and clues that tell you how much and what the words mean to them. There's a lot of inference in social media that leads to a lot of unintended and unnecessary conflict.

My daughter works in IT (presently on medical leave) and has come to the conclusion the internet is the worst thing humanity could have created. It has sped up the destruction of our planet and killed so many of our connections in our own communities.
