Paul Caruso @PaulCaruso
'CNET is laying off roughly 10 percent of its editorial staff – around a dozen people, including long-time veterans of the media and reviews website – just weeks after acknowledging it has started using artificial intelligence programs to write certain articles, the Verge reported Thursday.'

I suspect, from comments, etc. I have seen on Upwork, this may be happening more and more as people balk at actually paying real writers instead running things through AI and paying peanuts to clean up the garbage it produces.

This is why #SAGAFTRA striked. Corporate America will squeeze as much blood as they can out of their turnip Workforce and then expect us to pay higher cost for their content. It's ridiculous and the system is on the verge of breaking.

But cheap.

Corporate media doesn't care about anything but the bottom line they can boast about at shareholder meetings.

(The MBA capitalist view that every quarter needs to be profitable is utterly unsustainable. But it does make some folks VERY RICH, while killing industries, in the interim.)

Unfortunately, this technology is unavoidable. Currently the AI landscape is basically the wild wild West. We really have to get the misinformation and biases under control with this tech…that’s one of its most dangerous problems.

In a few years time, we'll hear of companies paying big bucks for consultants to reverse-engineer and fix AI-built systems. The collapse will be spectacular.

For ANY of us, except the c-suites siphoning out every penny to their own portfolios.
Or so they desperately love to believe.

Like they don't exist on the same planet as the rest of us.

Saw this earlier this afternoon. Shocked but not shocked. They just promoted a couple of people to new positions of the editorial staff

The real concern I have is with companies implementing these technologies in leu of the required human expertise behind it. Like as a developer, I can’t wait to use this in my work flow, but it’s a tool for me, not a replacement.

It would be great if Spoutible had a journalism piece eventual - and local/global Spouters could be vetted to get press cards and cover stories.

Just one more reason why we're going to have to start seriously looking at a Universal Basic Income, IMHO. What's going to happen when it's no longer economically profitable to hire actual living humans?

This follows layoffs at NPR and CNN. Sadly weakening of the press is a trend. Newspapers and other organizations still report global issues, mostly quoting one another because they have no staff, but local issues often fall unreported unless cell phone or video footage makes them viral first.

Some of us do. Some writers should be afraid. Others have a fairly lengthy runway yet to go before they're in jeopardy.

Pathetic. Even after having to retract/correct most of their work AND even after others in the industry raised concerns about accuracy, veracity, and plagiarism...they pull this shit?
