Trauma Epidemic

How do we break the cycle of the most severely psychologically trauma-conditioned people climbing to positions of power? (See any number of news reports at any level for endless examples.)

Understanding is the first step.

Good question. I suspect that individuals who survive traumas [early life trauma in particular], may learn a set of coping skills that are effective in that maladaptive context but they retain them for a lifetime. Having survived trauma early on, they are incredibly resilient to life's challenges./1

Thus, they learn two things: 1) An ability to endure under horrible circumstances and 2) that being the person in power [or linked to the powerful] is better than being the abused/powerless. It's a bad combination. It doesn't happen to everyone who experiences ELT, but enough to be problematic./2

I agree that understanding them is the first step. Trauma-informed therapy should be the next step. They need to address the unresolved trauma and learn more adaptive coping mechanisms./End
