Some of you are using the correct acronym and still getting it wrong. 🤓

1. 7 − 4 = 3
2. 60 ÷ 5 = 12
3. 12 × 3 = 36
Christopher Bouzy @cbouzy
60 ÷ 5 ( 7 - 4 ) = 36

Python says: 0.36

Use those parentheses and disambiguate.

A *lot* of people are reading the equation as 60 / (5(7-4)). Drawing it out by hand shows the error quite clearly.

According to redditors, sometimes it's BOMDAS.
Out of curiosity, I decided to look if the internet has PEMDAS calculator sites.I actually found one that got it wrong. Can't access it now, though, because they want money. As if! 😂

I don't have time right now to look it up so I'll just ask.

Is there an "implied" set of parenthesis around the 60 / 5 in this PEMDAS acronym/rules?

The way I was taught was that the implied multiplication of 5(7-4) came before operator defined multiplication or division, because it is written as a single value. Similarly, a number written as a fraction, implied division, comes before the operator defined actions.

The acronym implies you do the multiplication then division which would be
7-4=3
5x3 = 15
60/15= 4
Instead of going left to right after you do the first step which is what I was taught and how you did it.
