Today, I tried for half an hour to do all the steps to use an Evgo charging station and every time it seemed the station was about to be usable, the damn app I was forced to download to use the station threw in extra steps. Then, at the very end, it still would not let me charge my vehicle.

Evgo's charging stations/app combo provide a horrible user experience. I don't understand why big corporations spend so much on marketing and so little on basic user testing and addressing customer feedback.

It has to get easier, I agree. It should take no effort. I have enrolled my EV into their no-app program, which allows me just to start charging as soon as I plug in, and they bill my card directly. It saves all the steps the app makes you take, but you do have to enroll.
