Here's the thing about book banning as it is now in the United States.

Challenges are when someone asks a library to remove a book from their collection.

The book is considered "banned" when the challenge succeeds and the book is removed from a library.

Books are still available for purchase and for loan at other libraries.

However, a ban reduces access, particularly for school children whose parents can't afford to buy books, and that's not good.

Librarians who buy books are trained in collection development. They do not buy books willy nilly.

Book banning transfers the librarian's educated decisions about what books are appropriate for specific collections and puts it in the hands of untrained individuals who are making decisions for other people's children.

Just because a book is in a library does not mean your child has to read it.

Parents can monitor their child's reading and make decisions for their child.

Politicizing reading is just plain wrong.
