I suspect the administration will become increasingly critical of the Netanyahu regime (as they already have to some extent). Biden usually prefers working across the isle and making deals to public confrontation, but when its clear the other side isn't dealing in good faith, the gloves can come off

My question then is how many more lives have to be needlessly sacrificed before 'the gloves can come off?' He had an opportunity to change direction at the UN but sent his man to vote against it. I don't see the compassionate Joe that many love to talk about...

1/2 This overlooks his efforts to prevent escalation, establish the previous temporary ceasefire/aid/hostage exchanges, and his support for a two state solution and opposition to violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank.

2/2 One may fairly criticize his words at times, or the effectiveness of trying to influence Netanyahu as an ally rather than an adversary. But the image of Biden as indifferent to the slaughter in Gaza is a false one, produced by Putinists, Hamas apologists, and the "useful idiot" wing of the Left.

I don't think it helped his cause - if he had one - to go to Israel and declare himself a Zionist - with all it's political ramifications. By the way I am neither a 'Putinist, Hamas apologist - who by the way were initially funded by Israel to thwart a two state solution - or whatever else you said

1/2 As I said, I think Biden (among other things) felt he could exercise more influence over Netanyahu as an ally than an enemy. Regardless, you have now shifted the topic, from whether Biden supports a ceasefire, to whether he supports Zionism (that is, the existence of a state of Israel).

OK - back to the ceasefire. As an observer from outside of the US is there really a discussion to be had. Two votes at the UN - a ceasefire, with the immediate release of all hostages taken in October - Biden's White House voted against both & Bibi is clearly marching to the beat of his own drum.

Yes, and in my opinion the US should now back a ceasefire, as its clear Netanyahu won't respect international law.

However, I don't think it helps to oversimplify Biden's position. He can't be pressured to change course on things he hasn't done, and Trump regaining power would make everything worse

See this is the dilemma of the US - if not Biden, then Trump. I have in the past always supported Biden & yes of course wouldn't want to see the 'man child' return, but Biden miscalculated here & it's costing him dearly around the world & at home. He failed to grasp who 'Israel' truly is under Bibi.

1/2 That is certainly a possibility. Though, I do think it is possible that he achieved some (albeit insufficient) concessions that he could not have if he adopted the position of an adversary to Israel.

2/2 A public denunciation of Israel might seem righteous to many, but I'm not convinced it would accomplish much, certainly not short-term. Israel's tendency when threatened is to escalate, not back down.

If we cut off arms, Netanyahu might approach Russia/China for arms. Or worse, go nuclear.
