Canada has many unique place names, and I am looking at the origin of some of them.

Today, it is Wawa, Ontario!

The location of Wawa, Ontario was the location of a fort in the 18th-century called Fort Kaministiquia. The fort was eventually abandoned.

In 1897, gold was discovered on Wawa Lake, and the population in the area grew to 1,700 in one year.

In 1898, the community was known as The Mission locally but officially it was Michipicoten City. That name came from the nearby Michipicoten River.

Eventually, the name was changed to Wawa, from the Ojibwe word for wild good (wewe). In the Song of Hiawatha, wawa was the word used for wild goose.

In the mid-1950s, the name of the town was changed to Jamestown in honour of Sir James Hamet Dunn.

The residents of the town did not like this and it was changed back to Wawa.

The giant goose statue, which is 8.5 metres high, was built in 1960 and has become a famous aspect of the community.
