Do we have any greenthumbs on here?

We are building a house. If we manage to get the foundation in this year, then I can put in some of the landscaping - so I'm trying to come up with a rough plan.

Give me your favorite trees that grow in 3b.

Call or websearch your county extension service. They’ll be able to tell you what grows best, what won’t grow and perhaps point you towards additional resources. A good approach before planting things that look nice and watching them wither. Yes, I made that mistake.

I have the extension info. I'm trying to narrow down a bit what I ask them about so I'm mindful of their time.

I will say avoid poplars, elms and maples unless you love pulling up millions of babies.
There are some very nice Amur Cherries. Mayday is lovely if you have room. Russian Olive with its silver leaves and dark bark is gorgeous.
Any evergreen will kill everything around it.
