One class of students I teach are obsessed with who a teacher’s “favorite” student is. One little girl is especially concerned with this and asked me who my favorite was. I told her, “No one, I hate all my students equally.”
I don’t hate my students but I do hate when kids pull stuff like that.

I'm 8th gr Eng teacher (29 years).
I get this all the time: Mr. Gray, what is your favorite band?; Mr. Gray what is your favorite sport? ... food?
Student?

Must be developmental phase or a way of placing themselves in the world.

It’s another way for them to bully each other. Especially kids who have a little “mean girl” in them but don’t want to be labeled a bully. That little girl looked like she wanted to cry. Another student, unpopular with peers, laughed when I said it. Kind of leveled the playing field.

I teach 6th grade science. I don’t mind questions about preferences in general (movie, Avenger, food etc) but this one class is in the business of ranking themselves in order of who is a teacher’s “favorite.” In particular the little girl who asked me. I don’t play those kinds of games though.
