Cherokee Nation prioritizes Oklahoma children and nutritious summer meals for Native and non-Natives through USDA Summer Food Program participation
"The Cherokee Nation is committed to ensuring children have access to nutritious food this summer because we know how vital food security is for families and overall health and wellness. It's regrettable and bewildering that the state of Oklahoma is abandoning federal funding and losing an opportunity to address child food insecurity."
The Cherokee Nation has participated in the USDA Summer Food Program for about five years and this past year served about 7,000 families. Like states, we have the opportunity to leverage a relatively modest administrative cost share and receive federal funds that positively impact families in need
When our program application opens in the spring we do expect more children will apply as we serve all children in Cherokee Nation Reservation who are eligible for free or reduced lunch program.
