NFL nerdery: It almost certainly did not matter, but I think the Colts fell into a common tactical trap on that last kick return last night. When has throwing laterals all over the field worked? Any time other than that college game in 1982, when there was a marching band on the field?

By contrast, there are many historical examples of a team scoring on a kick return by employing the complex tactic of having a fast player catch the ball and run like hell while 10 other players block for him. The team the Colts were playing against last night did it two weeks ago.

We're talking about a difference in win probability that is probably something like 0.03% vs. 0.01%. But if you're grasping at straws, don't you want to find the sturdiest one?

Footnotes: The so-called "Music City Miracle" was a designed trick return with just one lateral, not an improvisational comedy sketch with many laterals. The "Miami Miracle" was a play from scrimmage with two laterals.
