I was just out for a hike and ran into a gentleman I often see on a horse. There are a number of stables near me, and he's the only person I ever see interacting with or exercising any of the horses at any of them.

In light of this, I remarked how lucky his horse is to have him, and he told me that he visits and exercises his horse every single day (and horsie gets twelve apples a day!), yet there are over forty horses at his stable alone that have never once had an owner visit in all the time he's been there.

Horses are extremely high need animals, requiring exercise and mental stimulation, yet so often they're used as status symbols by bored people with more money than compassion. It's extremely frustrating to hear that my anecdotal observations reflect a very sad reality for many of these horses.
