Grammar dramatically changes meaning in a sentence. The most common example is:

"Let's eat grandma"

Are they talking to their nana or suggesting a bit of family cannibalism?

When writing we must be sure that our meaning is clear; that intent is communicated. Once a reader has to read a sentence more than once, you've interrupted their immersion in the narrative and the pacing/tension of the novel.

So how do we ensure we're writing unambiguously?

1. Self edit and rewrite your work, then edit it again and again and again

2. Be willing to kill your darlings. Get rid of any words, sentences, subplots and worldbuilding that muddies the pace, plot or tension

3. Try and get alpha/beta readers

4. Hire a professional editor

This comes at a cost, not one every writer can afford but they will catch things you misread, assume and can't see.

What else would you suggest?
