I've always been interested in place name origins, and I am exploring those origins for Canadians communities.

Today, it is Winnipeg!

The area of Winnipeg has been inhabited by the Indigenous Peoples for 11,500 years.

The area was used for camping, harvesting, hunting, tool-making, fishing and some agriculture.

The first European settlement was Fort Rouge in 1738. Fort Gibraltar was built in 1809 and Fort Douglas in 1812. Fort Douglas became Fort Garry in 1822.

On Nov. 8, 1873, Winnipeg was incorporated as a city.

The name comes from Lake Winnipeg. Henry Kelsey, an English explorer, came through the area in 1690 and adopted the Cree name for the lake, wīnipēk (ᐐᓂᐯᐠ), meaning muddy waters.
The Anishinaabe call the lake Weenipagamiksaguygun.

The name of the city and lake is similar to the Eastern Cree name for Hudson Bay, Wînipekw, which means "muddy or brackish water".
