I won't stop saying it. Natural. Hair. Is. Beautiful. My dreads means everything to me. I started them in 1995 & they reach my knees now in full-on salt & pepper gray. They're full of memories & power. It's beyond criminal to still be fighting this racist battle over hairstyles. When does it end?

The CROWN ACT is supposed to protect African Americans from hair discrimination. So why is a highschool senior in Texas being expelled over his locs? My latest from Slate

That boy's mistreatment is infuriating. He deserves so much better - all kids do!

But I'm totally distracted by your fabulous hair. To your knees? Holy wow! That must be stunning!

Thank u♥️I went through so many battles in workplaces in the 90s. It was blatantly racist. I never let them go no matter how much pushback I got. I hoped we'd be in more sane, equal, respectful times by now. I feel so deeply for this kiddo & all other kids like him in these insanely racist battles.

I thought the Crown Act was a great piece of legislation - if people (white people, natch) won't be accepting on our own, fine, now we're forced to by law. Deal with it. But somehow Black hair is still being policed and punished, and honestly, federal law should come down on this school.

It really should. It's insane to be in these battles over our hair. Federal law needs to smack some hard sense into Texas. This kiddo has suffered long enough. This racist mess shouldn't happen to anyone else ever again.
