A pharmacist explained once to me how controlled substances were tracked. Every pill and vial was accounted for from the day it came into the hospital pharmcy to when a physician wrote a script for it. Besides regulatory accountibility it was also the hospital billing that needed that info.

This is one drug order. It would only make sense if order intervals were known (weekly/monthly, etc .)

Provigil was a huge order (prevents sleepiness). It’s not given lightly.

This is the order from a pharmacy stock, not the record for individual administration. That is where you’ll see licensed staff record individual doses of controlled substances.
