Views of Black American hair changed once again w/the hair products of Madame C. J. Walker and Annie Turnbo Malone. Lye was a dangerous chemical used by Black women and men to "straighten" their hair. These two women created the formulas making the safe use of lye possible. Natural hair was passe.

I still remember my first 'perm'.
So much family history and angst tied into that event. Between my father's current piece being the hairdresser, my wig wearing prideful mommy with her natural hair, and young me unaware of the shit storm my innocent begging for it stirred up. Zoikes!
