White abolitionists get a lot of credit for what they did during the antebellum period, but for practical results undertaken at great risk to themselves, the Black Americans who ran the underground railroad are some of the greatest heroes in American history.

William Still maintained detailed records of all the freedom seekers who passed thru Philadelphia and were aided by his Philadelphia Vigilance Committee.

The adventures Still describes could supply an almost endless stream of daring escape films, but because of White supremacy, this heroic chapter of American history has been elided and minimized, while racist White abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison have been given the leading rolls.
