I think law-enforcement types should start carrying malpractice insurance. I'm tired of the public having to pay for these fuck ups. Every time there's a huge settlement- money is spent on settlements rather than public infrastructure or schools or mental health or whatever.

I agree but I don't think any insurance carrier will cover them. The injury is foreseeable, and since cops won't change their behavior, carriers will have to pay out often. I am surprised that the community hasn't demanded change because they are tired of tax dollars being diverted to settlements.
