Can we stop hurling the word dementia around as an insult? Dementia is a specific (often devastating) disease process.

Normal patterns of aging include increased cognitive processing time and inarticulate speech due to weakening lingual muscles. These things are normal and do not = dementia.

I think memory (or the lack of) is a lousy / lazy proxy for measuring cognition. People use it because it’s something they can easily observe

Exactly! Just like in school where they focus on standardized tests, which have never measured smarts or intellect but only memory for facts.

Agree (maybe preaching to the choir!).

It's similar to driving, where you want to measure if someone is driving safely or not (so far, so good). Measuring that is complicated, so they pivot to something simple which is to use speed limits (objective, easy to measure). 🤔
