What I don't understand is why Americans call their football, football, when kicking is about 1% of the game? Football as a word is clearly descriptive of soccer.

I don't understand either, and to add to the confusion, Rugby is called Rugby Football.

Nobody I know who follows or plays rugby typically adds that - they're more interested in whether its Union or League.

Yup... Rugby Union, Rugby League, or Rugby Sevens ... still it was always odd my club was MRFC (Munich Rugby Football Club).
