The discourse around the AIDS quilt in the '80s taught me a bit about the history of quilting. Quilts are subversive af - a means of visual storytelling and record-keeping when other options were impractical or unavailable, often denied to the creators by those who didn't want their story told.

I saw a portion of the quilt in Dayton OH. It was in a University gymnasium-that’s how big it was & it wasn’t the whole thing. I was so overwhelmed by all the names & then I saw someone I knew from high school & I just wept right there in front of everyone in that huge gym

When we heard the quilt was there, we were so excited to see it. Excitement flew through the door the second you walked in. Huge colorful squares with pretty quilted designs & then you look at the names. I saw others crying so it wasn’t just me.
