In 1919, the NAACP dubbed "Lift Every Voice and Sing" their "National Anthem." This song is a hymn, with lyrics by James Weldon Johnson (1871–1938) and set to music by his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson (1873–1954). James Weldon Johnson was a former resident of 409 Edgecombe Avenue, NYC.
