Rewatched an extraordinary movie this week: Once Were Warriors (1994). This intense indie film from New Zealand follows the magnetic Beth Heke as she struggles with domestic abuse and her own demons.

CW for violence, rape, child abuse, and suicide. Parts are hard to watch, but true to life.

True! It’s ironic that the actors playing the two biggest villains turned out to be the ones with the most successful careers. A lot of the movie posters feature Jake the Muss, rather than Beth (the hero) 😕

I don't remember the movie posters, but back when it came out, I saw it as soon as I could.

I first saw it in 2000, so not new. But now I’m watching it as a mother, which feels very different. Such a tragic story, but uplifting at the end.

Definitely a gut-wrenching film. Worth the watch, though.
