My guess (and it is just a guess) is that the timeline only loads a specific number of spouts, and when you scroll to the bottom of that set, it retrieves the next set of spouts, hence the delay. Another guess, Spoutible team put the ad at the end of the set of spouts, as a natural break point

I don't mind ads but is it just me or does scrolling seem to lock up when you get to an ad for a few seconds so you are forced to view it rather than scrolling by at normal speed?

Typically when you get to the end of content and it's loading more you get the three little blue rectangles that may or may not move a little bit. Then more content loads.
That is not what is happening here. You get to the ad, you attempt to keep scrolling and nothing moves for several seconds.
