I don't know why it's true but it is: The Happy Prince, by Oscar Wilde, is the book or story that has most affected me ever since I read it as a young child.

Read that one in college as part of a collection of Wilde's works. Broke my heart as that one of the few times he didn't succumb to his ironic cynicism and just showed vulnerable sincerity. I'd put it right up there with The Giving Tree.

As I grew older and read more of his works, I still saw some of that hope buried in the cynicism.

It was pretty deep, though. :)
