There's a video on youtube where parents had taken their kids to adopt a puppy, and after the kids picked one out and fell in love with it, the parents took them out and told them it wasn't happening after all, and left one kid crying and the other just staring out the window silently.

That makes me sick. This isn't sweet. It's not cute. This is people playing with their kids emotions so they can sell a video to a viral video company.
This is how kids learn to manipulate others.

Surprising kids is a great thing, but hurting them first as a "prank" is just so callous. And people have/will argue that "kids get over it" but this is part of how they learn who they'll be. Even if it's "happy puppy day" in memories after, it shapes who they are and their trust, etc.
