In Alabama, a roofing company illegally hired a 15-year-old.

On his first day, he fell 50 feet down, fractured his skull, and died.

All per US Department of Labor proceedings — fining the company $117,175.

It should be 10 times that.

THIS is why we need child labor laws.

The fine should be tripled and then given to the young man's family.

Tragic. But is it something more/stricter laws would have prevented?

Laws requiring that children know their rights, such as to refuse dangerous work, or are not allowed to do certain types of jobs, or must receive paid training, including safety, etc would each prevent accidents like this.

In Alabama they only care about “children” not yet born. Once they are out of the womb, they are on their own…🤬

We really need to pressure our leadership to push for updates to the regulations that set these fines. The problem is that DOL isn't allowed to fine above a certain amount (much lower than EPA fines.) So that needs to be changed on a federal level.

if you are a roofing company how do you get away with "subcontracting the work" , that's the danger passing along the buck of responsibility, we see in so many of these child hiring cases...glad someone held Apex accountable in some way

Horrible! Like it's not tragic enough to lose a child this way, but to then be told their life is only worth approx $100k... not that you can put a price on a life, but that is insulting.
