I was pondering this: Why is it mainstream America never seems to have an issue with racial classifications until a culture or group decides to name itself (Native American, Black American, etc etc.)?

Suddenly, it's like, "Why do we need categories--aren't we all Americans?"

The response is disingenuous, as the same people saying this had no issue with categories when their side was doing the designatin'...

It appears some believe classification is only valid when it is forced upon a group or bestowed; they will concede not one aspect of power to the marginalized, even its own cultural name.
