As #Blackhistorymonth2024 comes to a close, let’s remember Minerva Johnican who shattered barriers in 1972 by running for office in a city dominated by conservative white men. Despite initial setbacks, she became the first black female Commissioner in Shelby County, in 1975.

Throughout her career, she made history as the first black person to hold various positions, including an at-large position on the Memphis City Council. Johnican's legacy as a trailblazer for black and female representation lives on.
