See, I dunno how it works for white people. I can imagine. I can imagine that you're told and shown by well meaning people that your race classification has nothing to do with who you or others are "on the inside" - your character. As in, good or bad ain't determined by what you look like.

not at all. but I do hate it when someone, anyone, decides anything about that individual person because of how they look or what they call themselves. Does what they call themselves or what anyone else calls them change the beauty of their being in any way?

The whole MLK quote about being judged for the content of one's character. Right, right, right, I getcha.

But that does not mean that race can't tell you ANYTHING about a person. Or gender. Or sexual orientation. Or religion.

It can.
And does.

There is a profound difference between thinking, "She's Black. I won't leave my purse open around her, she probably steals..." and thinking, "she probably has had people judge her based on her race before."

One assumption judged character. It's the kind of racism you're trying to avoid.

The other's a reasonable assumption about her experience based on what you know about the country. It can keep you from saying dumb stuff to her face, like, "racism is a thing of the past."

This whole idea of "your characteristics tell me nothing about you" is ridiculous and flies in the face of science (heuristics) and common sense. Of course it matters if someone is gay. Their experiences shape their everyday life, just like yours shape your life.

Being white shapes a white person's life. How you've been taught/socialized. Where you live, what you eat. What you thought you could be when you grew up. What you understand about race relations.

Just cause you haven't thought about it/can't see it don't mean "white" says nothing about you.

If the point of avoiding stereotyping is to interact with other people in a more genuine and respectful way, then pretending things that shape their lives like their gender or their race doesn't matter is completely losing the plot.

In the 80s (especially early 80s) the buzzword was “Tolerance.” Looking back, that was just so terrible in every way.
