Janet Collins (March 7, 1917 – May 28, 2003) was an African American ballet dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She broke racial barriers in the world of ballet. Collins faced discrimination in the dance world during the 1930s and 1940s. #harlem

In 1932, Collins auditioned for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and was offered a position, but on the condition that she paint her skin white for performances. Collins refused and became the first African American dancer to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in 1951.

She went on to have a successful career as a soloist with the company, performing in productions such as "Aida" and "Carmen."

In 2007, in recognition of Collins' outstanding work and dedication, her cousin Carmen De Lavallade established the Janet Collins Fellowship to honor aspiring and talented ballet dancers.
