When I was a child I remember my mother, grandmother and aunts using these. I grew up in a double house and my mother's sister(my aunt) lived on the other side. I can remember being home sick from school and they would talk to each other through the basement walls on Monday while using these.

I actually used one as an adult! I didn’t even know those things still existed when an elderly neighbour told me she was getting a “new”one and asked if I’d like her old one. I said sure, figuring it would beat going to the laundromat. And it did! Those machines were workhorses and really well built

My mother had hers for over 40 years without a single repair and doing laundry for two adults and five children. Something finally happened to it and the parts were no longer available to repair it. She finally relented and got an "automatic washer".
