I think a lot of people don't get (or choose not to) why voting third party or not voting helps Trump, not Biden.

Simply: there are more people against Trump than for him. He can therefore win two ways: suppressing votes, or dividing the opposition.

Splitting the anti-Trump vote thus helps Trump.

Also it's been many years since "rigorous" civics and government classes. Seems to have been all folded into social studies. Very good (I think) article from several years ago.
