As I think of Saint Patrick’s day tomorrow, I’m reminded of my own Irish ancestry. My mother’s maternal grandmother hailed from a small village called Carrickbeg in County Waterford. Church records show they were all born out of wedlock (not uncommon in the 19th century). The bulk of the family

Whalens and Thompsons trickled to these shores to work the tobacco farms in Northern Connecticut between 1866 and 1899. Some becoming cigar makers themselves.

Photo is of my great grandmother, Margaret Thompson—from her wedding in 1903.
