As a sub-Spout to why anyone cares about Kate Middleton, the answer is: Diana. We know what she went through when the Royals decided she was too much trouble to have around. We all thought MAYBE they'd learned something from that. But King Chuckles wasn't paying attention.

It's also silly to simply dismiss the British Royal Family as just another reality show. The direct actions of England over the past 400+ years completely shaped a huge part of this world. Billions of people for multiple generations have been harmed while millions benefitted from that harm.

They are both a reality show and one of the biggest tourist attractions in the UK, pretty much where it begins and ends these days. Ceremonial use only. Yes, Britain has done many bad things in the past, But we also left a legacy of infrastructure still benefitting some of those countries today.

In Canada, we still have to go to the Governor General (the Crown's representative in Canada) to prorogue (adjourn) Parliament. As late as 2009, the GG actually refused a gov request to prorogue.

Perhaps the role is more ceremonial than before, but it still holds more sway here than many realize.

Yes, it's ceremonial because in Canada we are still part of the Commonwealth as such.
