In my experience, the majority of Americans don't believe in or want justice. They've been raised to believe in and want vengeance. They'd rather have another to blame, something to seek revenge for, rather than acknowledge the rights & equality of others.
I wonder where that got hammered into them

I think it’s comfort.

It’s when the comfort is threatened that targets are invented.

Agree to disagree, but I see what you are saying. Life is change, and if you are not comfortable with change then you will constantly feel threatened, attacked or uneasy.
Again, just my take. People don't like change, I get it.
But, change is inevitable.
Let go, or be dragged as the saying goes.
