A colleague is an alcoholic and has been sober for 2 years. She talks about alcohol and addiction frequently and at length in the office. Is this common with people in recovery, some way of staying on track? It’s getting tiresome, but I don’t want to upset someone who is struggling. #Addiction

It's common for someone who doesn't have recovery companions with whom she can have those conversations more meaningfully.

People like this are usually talking themselves out of their next relapse. Do be patient with her.

It does often feel like she’s trying to convince herself more than anyone else.

She is, believe me.

If it gets really irritating or distracting, I suggest that you look into some info about Al Anon.

It can help you and your workmates to make sense of this, and maybe come up with some strategies to cope with her.
