Update on the Grindavik situation #Iceland 34

The eruption, which started March 16th continues from 8 craters which have formed on the fissure. Lava output is far less than in the initial phase, but still ongoing. At the moment the lava moves mainly south / southwest..

... up to the task in the future, when more lava accumulates, remains to be seen.

While the 3 previous eruptions in the Sundhnukar area lasted between 1-3 days, this eruption already goes on longer than that and longer than expected by experts.

At the same time, the land is rising, which indicates further influx of magma underneath the surface. In the table below the rising area is indicated in red colours. It is thought that the magma rises there and makes its subterranean way laterally to the eruption site.

This is contrary to what had happened during the 3 previous eruptions, where the land had sagged,. A rising surface though could indicate an continuing influx of magma and thus an eruption that lasts longer because of a continuous feed.

But volcanos like surprises!
