Thoughts on Monday of Holy Week: We know that Holy Week ends with Resurrection Sunday. We know that the story of resurrection is central to the Christian faith. It is, surely.

But we also tend to want to rush to resurrection without considering the path that leads there – the path that necessarily requires death.

It certainly is good news that God can bring new life where there once was death and that this resurrected life can transform our life today and preserve us into eternity with God. That’s great news. But isn’t it also good news that Jesus walked the path of suffering and death before resurrection?

More than anything else I find in scripture, this tells me that God is with us, and God understands us. God is not, as so many ancient civilizations feared, a fickle cosmic power who must be assuaged and cajoled with offerings, sacrifices, and rituals.

God is not, as the Greek philosophers argued, the perfect untouchable Form, unmoved by our suffering–because that would mean that God is somehow less than perfect. God is not the distant emperor of the universe, far above us at the top of a hierarchical chain of being, as the Medievals taught.

God is not the cold, stern judge dangling humanity above the flames, as Jonathan Edwards preached. God is not the vindictive teacher sending hurricanes to destroy New Orleans in order to punish the gays, as Franklin Graham preached. Nope. None of those things. How do we know? Because of Holy Week.

Whatever else God is, God entered into the human condition to face it with us, to bear our suffering, and to walk in our shoes. God did this because God’s nature is entirely other-centered, co-suffering love, and love’s power comes from sacrifice.

You are not alone. You have never been alone. You will never be alone. The One who walked the lonesome path of the passion, walks with you now.
