I had something like that before the IBM. It had a tiny screen where you could check one line of text at a time before it printed out. I think the only reason we got the computer was, 1) a deal through my college and 2) my dad actually taught computer programming, so he probably pushed me into it.

I actually never owned a typewriter. I'd borrow from my friends and roommates.

More like one of these. Heavy and black, with 2 keys that stuck every time.

That was only in college. Before that, it was a regular old typewriter, and usually my mother would do the typing because she was so much faster. Handwritten reports for the win.
