Venting. In our busy lives, it's easy to get caught up in the moment and to want to solve problems efficiently and effectively. However, we often overlook the fundamental need for empathy and understanding. I was recently reminded of this when I recalled sharing a minor frustration with a friend.

I recounted an experience where I needed to purchase a gift card for a client but faced delays due to a confirmation of signup email not arriving as expected. I resent the request over a couple of hours, but the email needed to validate my account only showed up a week later.

Instead of receiving the empathy and understanding I sought, my friend immediately jumped into problem-solving mode. Rather than acknowledging my frustration, I was met with a barrage of suggestions and criticisms.

“You must have done something wrong! Did you check your spam mailbox? I think your mail server must have held it back. A big company like that would not mess this up, you shouldn’t blame them.”

I couldn't help but feel disappointment as I realized that this dismissive response wasn't an isolated incident but rather a pattern. It dawned on me that no matter the issue, my gripes were consistently met with a similar lack of empathy and understanding. They were always used to push me down.

This left me feeling very disheartened and sad. I realized that I had been seeking support from someone who habitually overlooked my feelings and experiences. My trivial email incident, and the lack of empathy that followed, resulted in a flood of painful emotions.

You just never know when a dismissive reaction, even when the intent is to offer an unasked-for solution, will trigger someone and push them over the edge. It may be something small, but when someone has been dismissed over a long period of time, it can feel exponential to them.

It's moments like these that highlight the importance of simply listening and empathizing with others. Sometimes, people don't need solutions; they just need someone to hear them out and validate their feelings. In our eagerness to help, we mustn't overlook the power of empathy.

It's important to remember that even in the most mundane situations, offering a listening ear can make a world of difference. Let's strive to build empathy in our interactions and prioritize understanding over problem-solving.

Sometimes the greatest support we can offer is the simple act of being there for someone.

In response to Josef Konrad.
Far more common than it should be, I’m sorry for your frustration.

You are welcome to vent to me any time, I’m a spout away. I hope you were able to reconcile some of those emotions.
