When Jimmy Swaggart & Jim Bakker fell, that's when "pro-life" became the identity of the charismatic right. Yes, they voted R, but it became a national identity, a way of saying they belong to this so "stop making fun of us for supporting these two preachers."

Never underestimate how powerful words like "holiness" & "set apart," have been portals for the segregationists who formed the Assemblies of God to pass the right to discriminate to this generation.

These words used to describe themselves allow discrimination to be "real love."

I had a front row seat in the Assemblies of God in the late 1980's to the transition from being known as followers of Swaggart and Bakker to being known as "Pro-lifers." Being "pro-life" was how "we" felt connected to each other, how they felt a path into a national identity.
